Typically, the procedure takes one and a half to three hours. This depends on the amount of targeted tissue being ablated during the procedure.
Patients will be under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia with conscious sedation when being treated with Sonablate® HIFU.
Yes, patients will have a urinary catheter placed for 3-7 days after the procedure.
Most patients experience urinary urgency immediately post treatment because of the urinary catheter in place. This feeling typically lessens within several hours after the procedure. Other side effects can include pain and discomfort and urinary tract infection (UTI).
One benefit of undergoing a Sonablate® HIFU procedure is that most patients are sent home the same day of the procedure.
It is recommended that after being discharged, patients spend the rest of their procedure day resting at home. In the days following the procedure, most patients can return to their daily activities.
Medicare covers HIFU on a case-by-case basis throughout the United States. Private insurance coverage for HIFU varies by plan but is covered for most radiotherapy failures. You should work with your insurance provider to determine coverage requirements.
